What to Recycle

Most all Headwaters recycling sites will have binnies for the following commodities - Paper, Glass, and Cans. Other sites have binnies for Plastics, Magazines, Cardboard and Office Paper.

  • Mixed Paper- Mixed paper bins can take Newspaper, Office Paper, Mail, and Magazines.
  • Glass- You can put any color glass into the glass binnie. Lids are NOT an issue. A quick rinse will reduce the number of bees attracted to the bin. Thanks!
  • Cans- You can put either aluminum or steel cans in the can binnie. Again a quick rinse will help with the bees.
  • Newspaper Only- If a binnie is marked Newspaper Only, please restrict the paper to just newspaper. This bin should only be in the bigger towns. If you are in a rural area and see this you may put other paper types in with the newspaper and we will relabel them soon.
  • Plastics- The plastics binnies are for #1 and #2 plastic bottles only. Please remove the lids and give them a quick rinse. Plastic oil bottles are not accepted. We only accept plastic in a couple of markets. Plastics are not economically feasible currently. We are testing in two or three areas to learn how to accept them in all areas. But that is in the future for now.
  • Cardboard- Most small cities accept cardboard for recycling. Call your local city or county for more details. Please flatten your cardboard boxes.
  • Magazines Only- In a couple of our bigger towns we have bins for just magazines. Any magazine up to a half inch thick is acceptable.
  • Office Paper- Please restrict you deposits to white paper at these bins.
  • Batteries and Cell phones- You can recycle RECHARABLE batteries and cell phones at Radio Shacks, Home Depots, Staples, Wal-Marts and other locations you can look up at www.call2recycle.com.
  • Computers-
    • Go to Cristina.org to recycle working computers to new users. Dead computers often are recycled by the manufacturer. Go to the manufacturer's web site and see if they will take it back.
    • If you have a DELL branded product you can return it for no charge by going to their recycling page and following the instructions. I have used their service. All I had to do was package the computer, print a label and call for a pickup.
    • Staples has recently implemented a nationwide E-waste recycling program. For a $10 fee per unit you can recycle computers, monitors, printer and other consumer electronics. Call your local Staples for details.
  • Car Batteries- Your county waste transfer station should be able to recycle dead car batteries. Most businesses that sell batteries will take your old battery when you buy a new one.
  • Used Oil- Your county waste transfer station should be able to recycle used oil.
